A New Experience!!

"తల పైకెత్తితే, హట్టాత్తుగా కనపడతాడు చందమామా!!..
aa experience is always new. తరచూ జరిగినా..ఎప్పుడూ కొత్తే"! "ఈ సారి ఇంకో విధంగా చూశాను. 50 % bigger and 30 % brighter moon. ఈ వారం అంతా ఇంతేట! వార్తల్లో చెప్పారు.

ఇంటి నుంచి బయటికి రాగానే భయం వేసేలా కనిపించాడు నెలరాజు.కలయా నిజమా అన్నట్టు ఉన్నాడు.

మా ఊరిలో ఉన్న 'kopernik observatory' లో చాలా powerful telescope ఉందనీ, అది శుక్రవారం సాయంత్రం 6 గంటల నుంచి, శనివారం ఉదయం 6 గంటల వరకు అందరికీ అందుబాటులో ఉంటుందని నా స్నేహితురాలు మొన్న చెప్పగా విన్నాను. what a coincidence? అనుకున్నాను.

సాయంత్రం పని ముగించుకొని, ఇంటికి తిరిగి వెళ్తుండగా, అకస్మాత్తుగా తట్టింది, ఇవాళ్ళ 'శుక్రవారం' అని! inti daari వెంటనే ఆ observatory వైపు బండిని మళ్ళించాను. చీకటి, మలుపులు, చాలా ఉద్వేగవంతంగా సాగింది సవారి! వెళ్ళగా, వెళ్ళగా దాదాపు ఒక పది మైళ్ళు వెళ్ళానేమొ. ఎపుడూ రాని ప్రదేశం, కనుక మునుపెరుగని సందులు, రోడ్లు. ఒక్క నిముషం ఈ సాహసం సరైనదేనా అని సందేహపడ్డాను. ఎంత వెళ్ళినా తరగని దూరం లా అనిపించింది.

ఒక చిన్న ఘాట్ రోడ్ మీద కొన్ని మలుపులు తిరిగాక మొత్తానికి గమ్యానికి చేరుకున్నాను. బయట అంతా నిశబ్దంగా, నిర్మానుష్యంగా ఉంది.మెల్లగా, లోపలికి వెళ్ళాను. ఓయమ్మో! ..దాదాపు 50 నించి 60 జనాల వరకు ఉన్నారు లోపల. బయటికి, లోపలికి ఇంత వ్యత్యాసమా అనేల! ఏదో బస్సు ఎక్కి విహార యాత్రకి వచ్చినట్టు వచ్చారు జనాలు.

నిర్వాహకుడిలా అనిపించిన ఒకాయన్ని అడిగను, "ఎమిటీ హడవుడి?",అని! ఇవళ్ళ, live astronaut తో ముఖా-ముఖీ. అందుకే ఈ హడావుడి, అన్నాడతను. బావుందన్నాను నేను... ఇక్కడ telescope ఉందిట? అందులోంచి చంద్రుడిని చూడవచ్చట?, నిజమేన? అని అడిగాను. " ఓ యస్! తప్పకుండానూ. ఆగండి!, ఏర్పాటు చేస్తాను", అని లోపలికి వెళ్ళాడాయన.

చాలా ఆశక్తిగా అనిపించింది ఆ క్షణం. ఈ లోగా ఆయన ఒక assistant ని వెంటబెట్టుకొని, బయట ఒక observatory లాంటి ఒక చిన్న గది లోకి దారి చూపించాడు. ఆ గది మధ్యలో ఒక పెద్ద గొట్టం ఆకాశం వైపు చూస్తున్నది. అదే telescope అని అర్ధమైంది. అది చాలా పెద్దదిగా ఉన్నది. చూట్టూ చాలా computers ఉన్నాయి.వెంటనే ఆదిత్య 369 సినిమా లో time machine గుర్తొచ్చింది. ఎదో మాయా లోకానికి తీసుకుపోబోతున్న పుష్పకం లా!!

తీరా బయటికి వచ్చి చూస్తే, చంద్రుడు ఇంకా ఈ observatory ఉన్న ground level కి రాలేదు అన్నాడు assistant. "అదేంటి, నాకు రోడ్ మీదికి కనిపించాడే", అన్నాను, నేను! "మధ్యలో కొండలు ఎక్కారు, మర్చిపోయారా?" , నవ్వుతూ అన్నాడు అతను."కాసేపు ఆగాలి, ఈ లోపున కొన్ని వేరే గ్రహాలు, నక్షత్రాలు చూద్దాం", అన్నాడు.

అబ్బా తినబోయే ముందు నిరీక్షణ అంటే ఇదే! కానీ ఏం చేస్తాం? ఇంత దూరం వచ్చి? వేచి చూడాల్సిందే అని ఊరుకున్నాను. చంద్రుడు ఇంకా పెద్దగా కనిపిస్తాడేమొ అని నిలబడే కలలు కనటం మొదలుపెట్టాను. ఈ లోపున కొంతమంది పిల్లలు, పెద్దలు పోగయ్యారు ఈ సందడికి. ఆ assistant మమ్మల్ని పిలిచి కొన్ని galaxies, నక్షత్రాలు, ఇతర గ్రహాలు చూపించాడు. భలే ఉన్నాయి అవి. కింద ముగ్గు పిండి జల్లినట్టు, రేణువులు కనిపిస్తూనే, తెల్లగా అలికేసినట్టు ఉన్నాయి galaxies - group of stars!! సాయంత్రం 6-30, 7 ఇంటికి వస్తే, saturn,jupiter కనిపిస్తాయన్నాడు.ఈసారి ప్రయత్నించాలి అనుకున్నాను.

మొత్తానికి వెచి చూసిన క్షణం రానే వచ్చింది. చంద్రుడు నడి మింటికి చేరుకున్నాడు. telescope కి ఉండే eye piece(చూసే సాధనం) దగ్గరకు కన్ను పోనిచ్చాను. తెల్లని కాంతి కి కళ్ళు మూసేసుకోవలసి వచ్చింది. ఆ కాంతి కి కళ్ళు చెమ్మగిల్లాయి కూడా!కళ్ళు తుడుచుకొని, మళ్ళీ eye piece లోంచి చూడ ప్రయత్నించాను.

బూడిద రంగులో.. ఒక తెల్లని, మాసిన ప్రదేశం కనిపించింది. చిన్న చిన్న రంధ్రాలు ఉన్నాట్టు ఉంది ఆ ప్రదేశం అంతా! ఇదేమిటి? అని అడిగాను ఆ assistant ని ! "అదే చంద్రుడి surface అన్నాడతను. మీరు చూస్తున్నవీ , 'craters' అంటారు. అవి లోతైన గోతులు. చాలా పెద్దవి. ఒక విధంగా చెప్పాలంటే అఖండమైన లోయలు. అలాగే కొండలు కూడా ఉంటాయి", అని వివరించాడు.

అక్కడే ఉన్న ఒక పిల్లాడు, ' అవును, మన భూమి మీద ఇలాంటి craters ఒకటో రెండో ఉన్నయి. అదే చంద్రుడి మీద చాలా ఉన్నాయి, అన్నాడు!

ఓరినీ.. మనం ఇంతగా చూసి పొంగిపోయే చంద్రుడు నిజంగా అందగాడు కాదన్నమాట? అంతా బూడిదే.. పైగా గోతులు, కొండలన్నమాట!, కాని ఇక్కడికి ఎంత అందంగా తెల్లగా కనిపిస్తాడు? మెరిసిపోతున్నట్టు?

నిజం... మన భూమి ఎంతో అందమైనది. మిగతా సూన్యానికి ఇదొక నీలపు వర్ణ వజ్రం. ఎంతో రమణీయం గా ఉంటుంది. ఇదిగో చిత్రం చూడంది. ఇది చంద్రుడి మీది నించి తీసినది., అని భూమి చిత్రం ఒకటి చూపించాడు!.

  కళ్ళకు కనిపించేది అంతా నిజం కాదని చెప్పటానికి ఇదే గొప్ప నిదర్శనం అనుకున్నాను. ఎంతో ఆశగా వస్తే ఇదేమిటి అన్నను ప్రకాశముగా! దూరపు కొండలు నునుపు అన్న సామెత ఎంత సత్యమో అనుకున్నాను. మొత్తానికి మరువలేని ఒక అనుభూతి మిగిలించింది చంద్రుడి దర్శనం!!

We are living in a fast paced world- most importantly a highly advanced technological time period.

Some of us have seen both the worlds well! ' no gadgets to gadgets' ; ' food to vitamins'; 'speaking/socializing to texting'; ' cooking to fast/instant food' etc... to name a few 'small' changes.

one of the fast changing fields is electronics- in particular phones, going from  - ' circular dialing to touch tone to cordless  to mobile to smart ' and the other is the automobile industry.

Except for kids (toddlers to teenagers) all over the world, we  adults , haven't advanced very well in using our grey cells  in knowing and operating these things! I am sure we have similar experiences to share with regard to this issue, when connecting to the fast changing technology.

A couple of them from me :

Adventure ONE...

One of these days.. most unexpectedly I got to ride a very expensive car .  It was a dream come true for me.. since I come from.. and am still in the  "OMG  that CAR ??????" community.

here goes the complete story:

one nice and sunny September afternoon, I was volunteering at the front desk for a dance drama held at my university campus. I was busy running around helping people with snacks and tickets.

One of the organizers hurried up to me and asked me if I can drive around campus and find the caterer, who was supposed to bring in tea for the guests. He lost his way, and was tired of going in circles on campus. I gladly accepted to help, but then quickly realized, that I did not have my own car to go, as I was given a ride to the place.

Without hesitating I  told her so, and she did some quick thinking and gave me her keys and asked me to drive her car to get him to the place ASAP!!

I rushed to the parking garage as per her instructions and tried to unlock her car. As i pressed the unlock mode on the key, i realized it was  this CAR!

i had to press the start button to - keyless start it is.. and now started the real trouble. i could not find the gear rod.. it took me a few minutes to figure it out. i felt awkward and decided to go back and tell her that i could not drive it.

i counted 1 through 5 for a 'serenity' mode.. and scanned the entire dashboard and front panel for relevant stuff- to get the car go..i managed to shift the gear after finding it :) and moved on..
after a short drive, I heard my phone ring. The lady who spoke to me earlier, told me that the caterer reached the front desk.

I was  relieved that I did not have to drive the car any longer, and took a U-turn to go back.

I realized I had to take  a left turn to reach the parking lot- so wanted to turn on the indicator. BOOM.. I did not find the indicator! It was supposed to be near the steering wheel from my knowledge of cars.. honestly.. i did not find it there. or atleast did not understand how to operate whatever was on there.- to turn on the left indicator.

guess what next?? I lowered the window and starting waving my hand to the oncoming traffic-- signalling for a left turn. people might have thought I had six heads.. coz driving that big a CAR and i I could not use the indicator.

I parked the car, stopping over twice- to make sure I did not hit the car behind me. Because of the height, I could not use the rear view mirror, very well. And this car did not have a rear view camera- which is a standard feature for such expensive cars!

In short- you don't find things you need -where you need them!


Moral of the story : The grass on the other side is not green!

Adventure TWO....


I drove into the parking lot of a departmental store a few days ago, when I saw a car parked right in front of the doorway. It seemed like the battery was dead and the lady in the car could not move it from its place. She was trying to get some road side assistance.

Meanwhile, I saw another lady walk by and volunteered to help her out by jump starting her car with her own. I walked towards them to help her out in the process. She got the jump start cables from her car and gave them to me.

I asked this lady to open the engine door , so that I could hook up the cables to the battery. She tried, but could not find the lever to do that. She plainly said that she did not know where it was located. I went in and checked under the steering wheel- but could not find one readily. I pulled two other levers (one of them actually turned out to be a small glove compartment- probably intended for left over coins and change !!)  before the actual one. It was dark outside, and so we could not quickly locate the correct lever.

Finally we opened the front cover and hooked up the cables. A smaller adventure to save my life.

I am not trying to exaggerate, but things built these days are not so user-friendly.

Manufacturers and designers think they are providing the customers with more options and more comforts, but they are leaving out the 'convenience' and 'user-friendly' side !

Some standard functions atleast need to be stay in place whatever design changes may come with time. Or announce it loud and clear and  repeat it if necessary, so that people understand it.

With phones and other simple electronic gadgets the change is too fast. By the time the user aquaints himself/herself with a particular design, or function, a new one pops into the market.
